Stainless Steel Baking Sheets That Don’t Warp!

Everybody loves our aluminum half sheet pan and rack set – it’s been one of our best selling products for years. But, we’ve had heaps of requests from people all over the USA asking us to create a stainless steel baking pan to go with our best selling stainless steel cooling/baking rack.

Some people didn’t like the fact that you have to hand wash the aluminum pan while others were just really health-conscious and wary of cooking with aluminum. So, we set out to design a stainless steel half sheet pan, but there was one major problem – warping!

We tested dozens of prototypes in our test kitchen, they all cleaned up well in the dishwasher but every single one of them warped quite badly once heated in the oven. Sure, they would (usually) regain their shape once cooled but, every time they warped there was the danger of spilling fats or liquids or misshaping cookies. They simply weren’t good enough. So, we set the engineers a task – find a way to design a stainless steel baking sheet that doesn’t warp. Some said it couldn’t be done – “it’s physics” they cried. Others played with thicknesses and changed the corner shape of the pan until ultimately, they figured it out!

Combining extra-thick, 304 quality stainless steel with specially designed pan molding we are now, finally, pleased to announce the arrival of our uniquely designed, warp-free stainless steel baking sheets!

We’re pretty proud of these new products and they truly do resist warping – just watch the video. You’ll see how a regular (flimsy) stainless steel pan (one of the many samples we tested) completely buckles, bends and twists in the oven when we add a splash of water to the hot pan. Meanwhile, when water is added to the Checkered Chef stainless steel pan, the water bubbles and fizzles on the surface of the pan but the pan remains straight and flat!

We do want to impress upon you though, the engineers were right when they said what we wanted was to defy physics. The fact remains that when metal is heated it expands. Check out this article for an explanation of the physics behind it.

There’s nothing we can do about that. This expansion of metal when heated will cause most pans to warp and twist like the top baking pan in the video. We are not magical and we cannot completely defy physics. There are some circumstances, such as very high heat or when cold items or liquids are added to a very hot pan, that may still cause some movement in your baking sheet pan. But, due to the thick, heavy-duty stainless steel we’ve used, any movement will be minimal and barely noticeable.

We’ve created our new stainless steel pans in both the half sheet size (18 x 13”) and the quarter sheet size (9 x 13”) and they come in a variety of sets.

Sheet Pan Pancakes

Ingredients

  • 2 eggs
  • 2 Tablespoons Sugar
  • 3 Cups Self Raising Flour
  • 2 ½ Cups Milk
  • Pancake Toppings of your choice - could include strawberries and blueberries as pictured or, make blueberry pancakes by just adding blueberries, chocolate chip pancakes by adding chocolate chips, banana pancakes by adding sliced banana (or you could mash banana into the mixture) - you’re limited only by your imagination and what ingredients you have handy.

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 425℉ / 220℃
  • Grease your half sheet pan with cooking spray.
  • Pro tip - to keep your pan looking great and make clean up a breeze, line it with baking paper.
  • Add eggs to a large mixing bowl or jug, whisk together with a fork.
  • Add sugar and mix together (keep using the fork it works fine).
  • Alternately add your flour and milk mixing as you go until you have a nice smooth batter.
  • Leave the batter to rest for 5 minutes or so while you sort out your toppings.
  • Pour the pancake batter into the greased/greased and lined half sheet pan.
  • Sprinkle your chosen topping over the top.
  • Pop it into the oven for 15 minutes.
  • Serve with butter and maple syrup.
  • Enjoy!
  • Notes:
  • *If you don’t have Self Raising/Self Rising Flour you can easily make your own by following the directions here
  • *This is not a particularly sweet recipe - if you like it sweeter you may want to add more sugar. The sweetness will also depend on the toppings you add - if using chocolate chips you probably won’t need extra sugar as the chocolate will add the sweetness.
  • *You can be as versatile as you like with where you position your toppings, if someone doesn’t like blueberries, leave a section plain without them, or add chocolate chips to that section instead - you can get as creative as you need, it’s a very simple and forgiving recipe!
  • *As the pancakes are oven baked, not fried, you can feel less guilty about adding extra butter to them when serving.
  • *This recipe was designed for the Checkered Chef Half Sheet Pan - it should work just as well in any other pan of similar size, or, you could halve the recipe for use in the Checkered Chef Quarter Sheet Pan.

8 Things You Never Thought To Do With Your Kitchen Scissors

 

 

Are you getting the most out of your kitchen scissors?

Ingredients

  • 1 Orange
  • 9 oz (250g) Butter
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • 3 Eggs
  • 2 cups Flour
  • 4 Teaspoons Baking Powder
  • 9 oz (250g) Chocolate Chips

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (170°C)
  • Cut orange into pieces and place in blender or food processor.
  • Add butter and sugar.
  • Blend/process until smooth.
  • Add eggs, 1 at a time, blend/process after each addition.
  • In a separate bowl, combine flour and baking powder.
  • And add to mixture.
  • Blend/process until smooth.
  • Transfer to a large bowl.
  • Add chocolate chips and combine.
  • Place mixture into a greased ring or kugelhopf tin.
  • Bake for 40-45 mins.
  • Remove from oven when cooked. Stand in tin for 5 minutes, then tip onto cooling rack.
  • When cool, sprinkle with icing sugar to serve.

  • 2 ripe bananas
  • 1.7oz (50g) butter, melted
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 cups flour
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 170°C (350°F)
  • Mash the bananas.
  • Add the melted butter and mix.
  • Add the eggs and mix.
  • Add the milk and mix.
  • Add the brown sugar and mix.
  • In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking powder and cinnamon.
  • Add the flour mixture to the banana mixture and stir to combine.
  • Pour mixture into a loaf pan.

The Best Banana Choc Chip Muffins You Have Ever Tasted

This recipe is a staple, go-to recipe in our house.  We use it probably far too often, but a batch of these delicious muffins never lasts long.  Especially good when nice and warm, fresh out of the oven, but also great the next day, if they last that long!  I don’t think you could call them healthy exactly, but you might notice that there is no sugar added to this recipe (the bananas, honey and chocolate chips take care of the sweetness), and the bulk of the flour is wholemeal, so that’s got to be a good thing, right?

We use coconut milk because I tried it that way once with some left over coconut milk I had and they were fluffier and more delicious than ever, so now we always use coconut milk, but, as it says in the recipe, you can use any milk you choose.

The Easiest Gluten Free Chocolate Cake

We’ve called this the “Easiest Gluten Free Chocolate Cake” because it really doesn’t get any easier than this!  All of the ingredients are simply added to your electric mixer and mixed!  Pour it into the cake pan and your job is done! One of the yummiest ways to try our Checkered Chef Coconut Flour. We added a chocolate ganache (which is also simple to make) but you could eat it plain if you prefer.

The Easiest Gluten Free Chocolate Cake

Ingredients

    For the Cake
  • 3 Tablespoons Cocoa
  • 1/4 Cup Coconut Flour
  • 1 1/2 Teaspoons Baking Powder
  • A Shake or Two of Cinnamon
  • 4 Eggs
  • 4 Tablespoons Maple Syrup
  • 1/4 Cup Macadamia Oil (Could also use Coconut Oil if you prefer)
    For the Ganache
  • 250 grams (1/2 pound) Dark Chocolate Pieces/Chips
  • 1/3 Cup Cream

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 160°C (350°F).
  • Add all of the cake ingredients to a mixing bowl or electric mixer.
  • Mix well until smooth and combined.
  • Pour into small cake tin (we used a 7" tin), lined with baking paper.
  • Bake for 30-40 minutes until cooked through.
  • While cake is cooling make the ganache by adding the cream and chocolate to a stainless steel mixing bowl.
  • Place the bowl over a saucepan of simmering water and stir until melted and combined.
  • Refrigerate until thickened/set.
  • Spread over cake and enjoy!

In our house we love gingerbread men.  But, we don’t really like all the work involved like rubbing the butter in.

So we created the easiest and quickest gingerbread man recipe you have ever tried – using a food processor!

  • 1 ⅔ cups of plain flour
  • ½ teaspoon of bicarbonate soda
  • 1 teaspoon of ground ginger
  • 1.5oz (45g) of butter
  • ½ cup of brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of golden syrup
  • 1 egg

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 160°C (350°F).
  • Place flour, bicarbonate soda, ginger and butter in a food processor and pulse a few times to combine.
  • Add sugar and pulse again.
  • Place golden syrup and egg in your Checkered Chef Stainless Steel Mixing Bowl and whisk together.
  • Pour it into the food processor and mix until a dough is formed.
  • Tip onto a floured board or bench top, roll it out with your Checkered Chef Stainless Steel Rolling Pin and cut out shapes with cookie cutters.
  • Place on a lined baking tray and put in oven for 9-10 minutes.
  • Leave on the tray for 5 minutes, then transfer to your Checkered Chef Cooling Rack until completely cool.
  • Decorate as desired!
